Job Creation Project

The Georgia Strait Alliance is a solutions-focused non-profit organization working to promote awareness of the importance of the Georgia Strait marine environment and ways to protect it. We require two people to work on our Community Mapping project doing community outreach and engagement. Candidates must be EI eligible to work on this Job Creation Project.
Community Mapping Project: Create a mapping portal that contains all available data (online and hardcopy) of knowledge of the Strait of Georgia, accessible to communities around the region.
- Develop a database that will store data gathered through the project and act as a source to contain more information.
- Engage the public and other organizations (government and non-governmental) through outreach to garner input into the community map and in identifying threats to Strait.
Job Description:
Research and develop on-line mapping tool and data storage: Learn how to use the on-line mapping tool and develop a database to keep track of data gathered. Define various layers of the map and identify the types of data will be on each layer of the map.
Community Outreach: Engaging the public, community organizations and scientists to obtain information that will be entered into a database and visually represented on an on-line map. Attend public events, arrange interviews with community organizations and scientists in the region to find what data/information they have and how it can be represented and linked to on the map. Promote the on-line map to local environmental groups and the public as a tool that can shows places they love, areas they are concerned about, important habitat areas and areas they are working to protect in the Georgia Strait.
Data & website management: Ensure data gathered through on-line forms or interviews is entered into a database and represented on the on-line map. Update community mapping and events areas of the GSA website as required.
Team Member: Participate in the GSA team by helping to cover office reception and fielding requests for information from the public and conduct small research projects for staff. Actively participate in staff meetings and strategic planning discussions as required.
Skills required:
Computer skills: Familiarity with MS Office programs, internet and social networking tools, familiar with using databases; previous work with on-line maps an asset.
Research skills: Able to conduct research by internet and phone, maintain lists of contacts and their information and ensure follow through and follow-up.
Interpersonal/communication skills: Clear spoken communicator and good listener with ability to capture the essence and details of what people are saying. Ability to work both independently, with a co-worker and as part of a team.
Organizational ability: Ability to develop a work plan, organize time and work priorities, stay on task and work to a timeline.
Skills to be learned or enhanced:
Skills enhanced will include communication skills, research techniques, building and using a database, using a web-based map and creating website content.
Eligibility Requirements: Eligible participants will be unemployed individuals, legally entitled to work in Canada and: who have established a claim for Employment Insurance Benefits, or whose EI regular benefit period ended within the last three years, or who established a benefit period and were paid maternity or parental benefits within the past five years and are re-entering the labour force after having left it to care for newborn or newly adopted children, and who have developed a Return-to-Work Action Plan (RTWAP) that relates to the JCP project and indicates that the client’s barrier to employment is a lack of work experience.
